The Heath, on your family's doorstep
Hampstead Heath is one of the most popular choices for outdoor family sessions, and it's easy to see why. Nearly 800 acres of hills, meadows, woodland and ponds sit in the middle of North London — open skies and long grass, with space for children to move, explore and be themselves while natural light does much of the work.
It's also genuinely local to us. The Heath begins a short walk from the Family Frames studio at 34 Belsize Park, so sessions start without a long journey — and if your family already has a favourite corner of it, that's exactly where we should go.
Sessions are £500, including 10 fully retouched images. The price is the same whether you choose the studio, your home or an outdoor location, so you can pick purely on what feels right for your family.
Getting there
The Heath is a short walk from the studio at 34 Belsize Park, London NW3 4DX — a few minutes' walk from Belsize Park tube on the Northern line. Hampstead Heath is free to enter and open to everyone, every day of the year.
Where on the Heath?
The Heath is really many places in one. These are some of the settings worth considering — all part of the wider Heath, with the Pergola and Golders Hill Park just across North End Way on its western side.
Parliament Hill
The Heath's best-known viewpoint, with a protected view across the London skyline — an open hilltop made for wide, airy portraits with the city spread out below.
The meadows below Parliament Hill
In summer the grass here is left to grow long — children half-hidden in the meadow, seed heads catching the light, plenty of room to run.
Kenwood House grounds
On the Heath's northern edge, sweeping lawns run down from the white neoclassical house towards a lake — a more composed, classical backdrop without leaving the Heath.
The Hampstead Pergola & Hill Garden
An Edwardian raised walkway on the West Heath, its columns wrapped in climbing plants. The repeating arches and dappled shade lend photographs a quiet, romantic structure.
The ponds
Chains of ponds run along both sides of the Heath, from the model boating pond to the swimming ponds — still water, reflections and a calm, unhurried feel.
The ancient woodland
The wooded stretches near Kenwood filter sunlight into soft, shifting patterns — sheltered on breezy days and gentle even at midday.
The Viaduct
A red-brick Victorian bridge reflected in its own quiet pond, tucked into the middle of the Heath — a lovely, lesser-known spot away from the busier hilltops.
Golders Hill Park
Adjoining the West Heath, with mown lawns and formal flower gardens — a tidier, more contained setting for toddlers who like their parents in sight.
A two-hour session moves comfortably between two or three of these — long grass first, then woodland shade, then a view to finish. Which corners we choose is decided together, around your family rather than a fixed route.
How a session on the Heath unfolds
Sessions last up to two hours and move at a gentle pace. There's no rushing between locations and no stiff posing — just gentle guidance while your family walks, plays and explores. Children who won't stay in one place are entirely welcome; outdoor sessions are designed around movement, curiosity and freedom, not stillness.
Weather rarely gets in the way. Sessions go ahead unless it's genuinely awful — umbrellas, coats and wellies often make for wonderful photographs, and soft weather can be very flattering. If a date does need to move, that's arranged at no extra cost.

The Heath isn't the right setting for everyone, and that's fine. For newborns and very young children, a home session is usually the better choice, while the studio in Belsize Park suits children from around age two.
